The World Climate Simulation is an interactive role-playing exercise modeled after the United Nations climate change negotiations.

It is a collaborative effort by Climate Interactive, the MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative, and the UMass Lowell Climate Change Initiative. In this simulation, participants immerse themselves in the complex world of global climate negotiations to understand the urgency and actions required to combat global climate change. Central to this experience is the utilization of the interactive C-ROADS simulator, which swiftly evaluates the outcomes of the game. During the simulation, individuals from various backgrounds take on roles, such as delegates representing specific countries, negotiating blocs, or interest groups, while a facilitator assumes the role of a UN leader. Through negotiation rounds, participants work within their groups and engage in discussions with other teams to propose climate commitments. The facilitator employs the C-ROADS simulator to calculate and assess the impact of each group’s decisions. The ultimate objective is to collaboratively formulate a global agreement that effectively limits climate change to well below 2˚C and strives to stay within the 1.5˚C target established in the Paris climate agreement. The World Climate Simulation is adaptable for groups ranging from 8 to 50 participants, although it has been modified for larger gatherings of up to 500 individuals. It can be conducted both in-person and online, with sessions typically lasting 2-3 hours but also adaptable for shorter durations, such as 45 minutes. The simulation is designed to cater to diverse audiences, spanning high school students, community members, industry professionals, and policymakers. All the necessary materials and resources for the game are available for free in multiple languages.
